Sit Down at My Table

Sit Down At My Table aimed to further understanding and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through the tradition of eating together.

ANTaR groups hosted dinners in their homes, inviting Aboriginal people to eat with them as their guests. Over dinner everyone got to know one another and after dinner a discussion ensued about reconciliation, what it is, what it will take and what it would look like.

The project aimed to develop relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in their local communities, to begin a dialogue about reconciliation. It also aimed to provide material for the development of a play to be written that presents an Indigenous view of reconciliation.

The discussions were video taped and Aboriginal/ Torres Straight Islander playwright John Harding attended all of the dinners and used the material discussed to write a play called Second Helping based on the discussions over dinner.

In total, eight dinners were conducted - six with local ANTaR reconciliation groups and in family homes and two in Local Councils.

The project was funded by Arts Victoria.
