Federal Budget
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs were largely spared from major cuts in this year's tough Federal Budget and will benefit from increased investment in health and mental health. But there was little other significant investment in expanded or new programs to close the gap. “ANTaR welcomes additional investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, mental health, family tracing and reunion services and youth employment and training programs”, said Jacqueline Phillips, ANTaR National Director.

Thousands Walk the Long Walk
Thousands turned out on Saturday 21st May for the annual Long Walk lead by Essendon great Michael Long. The walk to the Melbourne Cricket Ground aims to raise awareness of Indigenous wellbeing and coincided with the Dream Time at the ‘G AFLmatch between Richmond and Essendon.

UN Human Rights Commissioner on Indigenous Issues
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay visited Australia to assess whether it is complying with its international obligations. NGV 150th Birthday Present of Indigenous Artwork
The National Gallery of Victoria’s greatest benefactor, The Felton Bequest has handed over 173 Indigenous artworks to mark the gallery’s 150th Birthday. Read the story here.

Archie Roach Receives Red Ochre Award
Singer-songwriter Archie Roach has been recognised for his contribution to Indigenous arts and culture taking out the $50,000 Red Ochre Award. The Award honours outstanding Indigenous artists as nominated by their peers.

Lionel Rose Given State Funeral
A state funeral was held at Melbourne’s Festival Hall for former world boxing champion and Australian of the Year Lionel Rose. Rose was the first Indigenous boxer to win a world title, beating Japan's 'Fighting Harada' in Tokyo in 1968. He also had success as a recording artist, with two top 10 hits as a country musician. Lionel Rose passed away on 8 May 2011 aged 62.

Sewerage Scheme Sparks Indigenous Inspections
As part of the pre-construction phase of the $40 million Loch Sport Sewerage Scheme Aboriginal heritage advisers will be among a team of specialists visiting Loch Sport, east of Sale, looking for areas of potential sensitivity for the Indigenous community. The cultural heritage inspection is a requirement of the Aboriginal Heritage Act and will take place over the next ten weeks.

Fears for Grampians’ Rock Art
Concerns exist that Indigenous rock art in Victoria's Grampians National Park could disappear within decades. The park has 297 sites of Indigenous rock art but only five locations are open to the public. Rooney-Aaron Grambeau from the Brambuk Cultural Centre says the sites have been damaged by erosion and he hopes the Government will provide funding to help restore the sites.
