Treaty Supporters
Scroll
As part of the Fanning the Flames project, ANTaR Victoria staff
initiated a project to create a unique 'petition' for a Treaty.
The petition takes the form of a 20m scroll which non-Indigenous
people will 'sign' with their thumbprint.
The Treaty Supporters' Scroll
serves as a call on the Crown and the Commonwealth Government to
recognise Aboriginal sovereignty and enter a treaty process. It
also seeks to spark action on local agreements (treaties) between
Traditional Owners and non-Indigenous people/groups/institutions.
The Treaty Supporters' Scroll travels from
event to event, hosted by local ANTaR and other groups, in different
sites in Victoria so that we can eventually fill it up with thumbprints.
Supporters receive:
- Treaty Supporters' badge
- Treaty Supporters declaration/fridge magnet
- Treaty Supporters Declaration and Agreement

Where resources allow, supporters will be
photographed individually or in a group displaying their inked-up
thumb (this image will read visually as 'thumbs up for a treaty').
Participants and are asked for a $3 donation to keep the project
going, and will also leave their contact details for follow up.
Eventually, the scroll can be exhibited as
an impressive, artistic object, and used to represent to Government
the depth of community desire for a treaty.
The project is based on the conviction that
a Treaty is needed to recognize Indigenous people as Traditional
Owners, and to lay the foundation for comprehensive cultural and
institutional change for the better.
