Tarerer Festival

Part of ANTaR's FTF project work (project worker Gary Lucas) was involved with the Tarerer Indigenous Concert and Tarerer Multicultural Festival in 2005 and 2006.

2005 marked the 10th year anniversary of Tarerer, and Gary was able to devoted significant time to help organise the festival. The festival also linked in with Warrnambool's first multicultural festival, which became the Tarerer Multicultural Festival.

Since 2005, the Tarerer Festival has been a going concern, releasing a CD in December 2006, presenting a Family Day in January 2007 and has opened the Port Fairy Folk Festival. It now has a government funded administration base to develop the organisation's aims for culture, community, environment, reconciliation and the arts.

The Welcome to Country website gives some information on the formation of the Tarerer-Gunditj committee, and its cultural and political objectives.

The Victorian Goverment has announced that it is providing funding for Tarerer-Gunditj to open a shopfront to promote and preserve Gunditjmara Kirrae-Whurrong culture. The plan is that it will also act as Koori Tourist Information Centre and employ someone to prepare submissions to advance Tarerer-Gunditj's ideals and Indigenous self-empowerment.

The Tarerer Music Festival is an ongoing project. For more information, go to the website.
