Batman 170th - Treaty Past, Treaty Present?

Many Melbournians going about their daily business on 6 June 2005 will have no idea of the stories underlying the place they inhabit … stories that have a meaning to this day in Indigenous – non-Indigenous relations.

170 years since the signing of the Batman Treaty, ANTaR Vic invites you to reflect on the ‘Founding of Melbourne’ and learn about the impact on and experiences of Indigenous peoples arising from European occupation of the Port Phillip district, where Melbourne is situated.

Through a series of events, we expose past and present interactions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Using history, comedy, satire and debate, Treaty Past, Treaty Present? reflects on past events, questioning what they meant to different people. The series then looks to the present and the future, examining the possibilities for treaties and agreement-making between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

Treaty Past, Treaty Present? is brought to you by Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation Victoria (ANTaR Vic).
